There’s more to wellness than just training and eating healthy meals. Taking a comprehensive idea of your health— nourishing your mind, body, and soul—is vital for your overall well-being. We like to call this self-care. Here are a few of our favorite ways to practice self-care.
We may be observing social distancing, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t stay connected! Organize a virtual coffee break or happy hour with your friends or family. Keep topics positive and tell each other one good thing that happened to you recently. Make plans for when you can meet again and how comforting it will be to give them an enormous, warm hug. Together we are better prepared to handle this and can be there for each other. That’s what friends are made for!
Follow a Flexible Routine
Build an agenda for your day but allow for some flexibility. For instance, get up around the same time each morning and turn in to bed around the same time at nighttime. Write out your goals for the day and slate out your work projects, but give yourself some time for your daily workout, a walk around the neighborhood, or to turn to your favorite book. Don’t be too harsh with your agenda that you pile on unnecessary stress. Finding a balance between a schedule and leisure will help you have a more productive and rewarding day.
Appreciation is good for humans. The more gratitude we extend to others during difficult times, the more joyful and more resilient we become. Give others grace. One of our favorite ways to exercise gratitude is to reach out to a loved one and let them know how much you cherish them. A handwritten note is also an exciting and unexpected surprise that is guaranteed to make anyone’s day.
Nothing’s better than spending time outdoors, basking in the fresh air. Take a walk with your dog every day after lunch. Say hello to your neighbors (from a safe distance) and ask them how they’re doing. Hang out in the sunshine for a bit and start taking slow breaths—you will feel so much better!
Just because we can’t go out for food at our local favorites doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy a good meal! Try a new recipe for dinner and make your meals an event. Queue up your favorite album, get the kids involved, and have a good time with it!
